Explore

Browse the stately campus architecture of the University of Washington and see what the contemporary Henry Art Gallery has on view. At the sleek Burke Museum, immerse yourself in Indigenous art and natural history. Rent a canoe or kayak at the university’s Waterfront Activities Center for a lakeside paddle. Not far north of campus, tree-shaded Ravenna Park is a lovely destination for nature strolls and picnics.

Eat and Drink

University Village shopping center is home to several buzzy local eateries, like Rachel’s Ginger Beer for refreshing sips and soft-serve ice cream and Hey Bagel, known for fresh sourdough-based bagels plus bialys and creative schmear flavors like chili crisp. Grab a salad or wrap at Evergreens, or a sandwich and espresso, beer, or wine at Mr. West Cafe Bar. Get your laminated pastry, quiche, and tartine fix at The French Guys. Northwest of campus, catch a view on the 16th-floor Mountaineering Club over tasty comfort food and drinks.

Shop

Near campus you can stock up on books and gifts related to magic and the occult at Edge of the Circle Books and well-curated art, gifts, housewares, and teas from Asia, and especially Japan, at Shiga’s Imports. Fine retailers are the draw at University Village, which is home to plenty of national brands along with locally owned shops like glassybaby, which carries handblown glass votives and drinking glasses in a riot of colors.
