What’s Happening in South Lake Union?

It’s September, but we’re not ready to see summer go just yet. If you haven’t visited South Lake Union recently, now’s the perfect time. Explore weekly farmers markets, engaging pop-up craft events, and enjoy a taste of Pike Place Market right in the neighborhood. Located just north of downtown Seattle, home to Amazon’s headquarters, The Spheres, Lake Union waterfront access, diverse restaurants, retail shops, and year-round community events. Discover what’s happening, the top things to do while in the area, and the best ways to get there.

Summer in SLU Recap

From Jul 1-Aug 29, South Lake Union had a Destination SLU Passport Program, a scavenger-hunt-style series that sends you to ten spots around the neighborhood to collect stamps. We grabbed our passport at Made in SLU, but they were available at any signature event (Made in SLU, the summer art pop-ups, Pike Place Market Express, or the SLU Farmers Market).

SLU Block Party: The Big One

Friday, August 14, SLU’s largest and longest-running party returned. The free, all-ages neighborhood tradition is packed with a community fair, lawn games, free fitness classes, street scramble, food trucks, and two music stages with live sets from local artists. Make sure to stop by next year to experience it.

Top Fall Events in South Lake Union

Made in SLU

Held every other Wednesday from 12–3pm at Nitro Plaza, Made in SLU is a free, drop-in crafting series done in partnership with Good Blooms. No sign-up required, just show up, scan the QR code at check-in, and get crafting. Most projects take 30 minutes or less, so it’s an easy midday break even if you’re just up the block for lunch, also great if you have kiddos in tow.
We stopped by during their World Cup-themed session, where they had everyone building their own mini moss soccer pitches a fun way to be a part of the FIFA World Cup buzz happening across the city this year. It was simple, fast, and a great way to step away from our screens during the lunch break, but also a unique thing to stumble upon as a tourist and rest your feet and get a free souvenir to take home.

SLU Daily Giveaways

Every day this month, a different SLU business is offering a giveaway. Pre-register for the free Mobile Pass, check in via GPS at that day’s featured location, and you’re instantly entered to win. It’s a fun, low-effort way to discover new spots around the neighborhood all month long. (all month, Sept 1–30, various SLU retailers)

Practical Magic & DIY Witch Hats

Get an early jump on spooky season and get ready for the release of Practical Magic 2 with this 21+ movie-and-craft night: watch the original Practical Magic (filmed on Whidbey Island) enjoy a midnight margarita, then make your own fabric witch hat to take home. (Wed, Sept 9, 5:30pm, The Craft Room)

FareStart Guest Chef Night

FareStart’s Guest Chef Night series brings in notable Seattle chefs to cook alongside FareStart’s job-training students, with proceeds supporting the program. Upcoming Chefs include Chef Ethan Stowell on Sep 10. It’s a great way to enjoy a genuinely great meal while supporting a nonprofit that’s doing real work in the neighborhood. (Every other Thursday, FareStart Restaurant)

Cider Summit Seattle — 15th Anniversary

One of Seattle’s biggest cider festivals returns to SLU for its 15th year, with 125+ ciders, meads, cider cocktails, and fruit spirits from 40+ producers. New this year: a separately-ticketed Cider & Cupcake pairing on Saturday morning, plus a Dog Lounge courtesy of the Seattle Humane Society for leashed pups. (Fri–Sat, Sept 11–12, South Lake Union Discovery Center Lawn)

Stir Up the Paint at Tapster

Tapster hosts a paint and sip series most Tuesdays, Saturdays, and Sundays. All supplies, instruction, and aprons included in the ticket price. Pair it with a self-pour flight from Tapster’s tap wall, BYO food. (recurring — most Tuesdays, Saturdays & Sundays).

Visit the South Lake Union Farmers Market and Pike Place Market Express

Pike Place Market Express

Every Thursday from 10am–2pm (running July 3 through September 25), Pike Place Market Express sets up shop at Path to Yes Plaza with fresh flowers, local produce, and prepared foods straight from Market vendors. We grabbed fresh bread and tamales on our visit, and honestly, it rivaled standing in line at the actual Market — minus the crowds. If you work in SLU, this is the easiest way to build a genuinely good farmers-market lunch into your Thursday.

SLU Farmers Market

The neighborhood’s South Lake Union Farmers Market runs on Saturdays from June 6 through November 21. It’s set up on 6th Ave near The Spheres, with over 100 booths of Washington-grown produce, local food makers, pantry goods, and delicious curbside brunch. With the Space Needle in view and a fresh, community-first focus, it’s an easy way to spend a Saturday morning.

Where to Eat in South Lake Union

Ba Bar SLU

Vietnamese street food, known for excellent phở, garlic noodles, and a delicious cocktail list. There’s even a walk-up vegan window, Ba Bar Green, if you’re in a hurry.

A sleek Japanese spot for fresh sushi, nigiri, and izakaya-style small plates, with happy hour deals that regulars swear by, make sure to try the spicy tuna crispy rice.

LOCAL Public Eatery

A neighborhood gathering spot on Terry Ave with 20 taps, shuffleboard, and elevated comfort food (the hand-pressed burgers and poké bowls both have a following) — a solid pick for watching a game or grabbing a casual bite.

Lady Yum

Right at Amazon’s SLU campus, this cheerful macaron-and-champagne parlor rotates through dozens of flavors and is a perfect sweet stop after a market run.

How to Get to South Lake Union

The easiest way into South Lake Union from downtown isn’t a car — it’s the South Lake Union Streetcar, which runs directly from Westlake Center into the heart of the neighborhood in just a few minutes. It drops you within easy walking distance of Nitro Plaza, Path to Yes Plaza, and the farmers market on 6th Ave, so you can hop off and go straight from stamp-collecting to snack-eating without worrying about parking. If you are driving, many SLU garages also offer free parking on evenings and weekends; pairing a Saturday market trip with dinner is an easy, low-hassle combo.
