Unveiled 2023 tourism data shows positive growth from 2022, either surpassing or making significant progress toward pre-pandemic levels.

Visit Seattle, the official destination marketing organization for Seattle and King County, unveiled preliminary visitation data and downtown hotel performance data for 2023 at their Annual Meeting. Nearly 450 tourism and hospitality professionals, community partners, and elected officials – including King County Executive Dow Constantine and Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell – attended the gathering at the historic SIFF Cinema Downtown.

The preliminary visitation data, anticipated to be finalized in April, indicated that:

  • A total of 37.8 million visitors came to Seattle and King County in 2023, a 9% increase from 2022 reaching 90.2% of 2019 levels.
  • Visitors spent $8.2 billion in Seattle and King County in 2023, a 12.8% increase from 2022 and 0.7% increase from 2019.
  • Visitors paid $787 million in state and local taxes in 2023, a 12.5% increase from 2022 reaching 94.0% of 2019 levels. That amounts to a tax offset of $859 per household in King County in 2023, up from $775 in 2022 and steadily approaching the $965 peak of 2019.
  • Tourism supported 65,486 jobs in Seattle and King County in 2023, a 7.7% increase from 2022 reaching 81.5% of 2019 levels.

Downtown hotel performance data for 2023 was also encouraging:

  • Occupancy came in at 68.6%, a 5.8% increase from 2022 reaching 85.9% of pre-pandemic levels.
  • The average daily room rate (ADR) was $233.69, a 5.5% increase from 2022 and 9.5% increase from 2019.
  • Revenue was $898.1 million, a 15% increase from 2022 and 0.5% increase from 2019.

“Seattle continues to be a desirable destination for travelers around the globe, despite the challenges that are still affecting the tourism industry,” said Tammy Canavan, President and CEO of Visit Seattle. “We celebrate 2023’s accomplishments alongside our tourism and hospitality partners. Our entire mission is to execute targeted initiatives that grow the convention, international, cruise, and domestic leisure markets.”
