State of Glass is a series that celebrates Seattle’s diverse glassblowing community and why this city offers the fuel and inspiration to help them, and the art form, thrive. This three-part series will focus on different inspirations for glass art. Each film will focus on different perspectives on glass art — nature, culture, and science — and how Seattle influences its artists’ work.
Dan Friday is a Native of the Lummi Nation and a lifelong resident of Washington State’s Puget Sound region. Drawing from cultural themes and using modern processes, Friday’s work is contemporary in format while maintaining basic Native American qualities. Dan has spent the past two decades working with artists such as Dale Chihuly, Paul Marioni, and Preston Singletary. Friday lives in Seattle, where he maintains an independent glass studio. His work can be found in collections around the world.
Debora Moore is a pioneer in glassblowing. In addition to being a wildly skilled artist (she studied at Pratt Fine Arts Center and then later at Pilchuck), she is also a unique presence in an industry that tends to skews both male and white. Debora was the first African American (and the first woman) to be in residency at Abate Zanetti in Italy and is a verbal champion for the African-American community here. Debora clearly has determination and a fearlessness for being in environments that could come off as hostile or unwelcoming.
Debora has followed a lifelong curiosity with nature — specifically orchids. She is drawn to the presence of unique beauty in an harsh landscapes. She seems to be chasing the literal still life in 3D space — freezing time.

He has participated in numerous solo, group, and public art exhibitions including curatorial and web-based projects. His work is in private and institutional collections, and has appeared in Creators, Brooklyn Magazine, Artslant, Artsy, New American Paintings, Artnet, The Huffington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Beautiful/Decay, WIRED, and VICE.
