Unwrapping the Magic of the Seattle Christmas Market

It’s that time of the year again where the air is crisp, colorful decorations adorn the city, and the aroma of festive treats fills the chilly atmosphere! The Christmas season has always been so magical for me. It brings me back to my childhood when getting together with my family and friends was the most wonderful time.

Going to Christmas markets is always on my to-do list, and when I heard about a new Christmas market coming to Seattle, my heart filled with excitement!

I’ve visited several Christmas markets across the US, but I’ve never had the opportunity to experience a German-inspired market. The idea of having one this year, right here in Seattle, was simply phenomenal!

Seattle embraces a new holiday tradition with the debut of the Seattle Christmas Market in 2023. The experience is inspired by founder Malte Kluetz’s cherished childhood memories in Germany. Kluetz first brought his passion for festive celebrations to Vancouver, BC, and now to Seattle, so he could share the magic of German festivities with his family and the broader community.

As I stepped into the market, I was immediately greeted by a symphony of twinkling lights and cheerful holiday tunes. The stalls adorned with vibrant decorations created the perfect holiday atmosphere against the backdrop of the Space Needle. It was a beautiful visual that ignited the holiday spirit within me.

One of the highlights of my visit was undoubtedly the diverse array of culinary delights. From delicious German Spätzle and Hungarian Goulash at Gulasch House, to gourmet foods from Argentina at Full Olive that are perfect for stocking stuffers or simply to enjoy at family gatherings. After walking around for a little bit, I found myself indulging in the irresistible Ho Ho Hot Chocolate to warm up and admire my surroundings.

After a brief break, I discovered a variety of unique handcrafted goods. Local artisans showcased their talents, such as Lunaraya, a self-care brand rooted in a rich family tradition of soap making that spans three generations since the 1950s. They offer an array of one-of-a-kind self-care products that make the perfect gifts for the season. I couldn’t resist grabbing a few soaps for friends and family, and of course for myself!

Wandering through the rows of stalls, I stopped at The Mushroom Hut, a female founded functional mushroom company based on Whidbey Island that is committed to transparent ingredients and community wellness. Next, a treasure of quirky delights awaited at OddGoods Puzzles, an independent Seattle-based artist selling jigsaw puzzles, things to color, and sticky oddities that add a touch of eccentricity to daily life.

Venturing further, Forest Fancies caught my eye. They transform natural wonders into wearable treasures, using lapidary and electroforming skills to create one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry. The allure of the vibrant Unique Glass Ornaments called to me. Their work showcases one of the world’s most extensive collections crafted with European gold and ecological paints—definitely a must see.

Sakti Jewelry was another stall that caught my attention. They are a family-run business selling jewelry created by a Balinese designer that emanates ethnic and boho vibes. Lastly, I paid a visit to Exquisite Knots. Established in 2018 in the Pacific Northwest, Exquisite Knots showcases the whimsical creations of a Chinese-American fiber artist, offering a crochet gallery inspired by her everyday experiences. Each stall I visited unfolded a story, a piece of art, and a touch of magic.

In addition to an array of shops and delectable food offerings, the market provides a continuous stream of entertainment included in admission, featuring enchanting Motown Christmas music performed by the Jewel Tones every Sunday.

Before leaving, my husband and I spotted the Nutcracker Haus where they had a variety of hand-crafted Nutcrackers, light arches, Christmas pyramids, window hangers, smokers, and hand-carved ornaments. I must share that one cherished holiday tradition my husband and I hold dear is selecting a unique Christmas ornament each year. These ornaments become more than just decorations; they encapsulate special memories that we’ve created together. This year’s favorite, a little Nutcracker, is a reminder of our visit to the Seattle Christmas Market! Choosing ornaments that capture the essence of our shared experiences adds a magical touch to our Christmas tree and brings back the joy of that first festive market adventure.

As I left the Seattle Christmas Market, I carried with me not just bags filled with unique finds and delicious treats but also a heart filled with the holiday spirit. The market, with its vibrant atmosphere and diverse offerings, will undoubtedly draw me back year after year.
