Hot Drinks

Blood Orange Toddy: Rachel’s Ginger Beer

Seattle’s homegrown ginger beer shop brings the citrusy cheer of summer to a decidedly wintry cocktail. Using its own blood orange ginger beer, RGB (as it’s lovingly called by locals) stirs in whiskey and a bit of star anise as garnish. The result is the perfect combination of smooth and tangy in each steaming-hot sip. Tasty side note: You can also order this drink in any of RGB’s other ginger beer flavors. 1610 12th Ave and 1530 Post Alley; rachelsgingerbeer.com

Hot Buttered Rum: Zig Zag Cafe

This cocktail mecca on the Pike Hillclimb takes great care with a drink’s smallest details. All that attention results in one of the silkiest, most decadent versions of hot buttered rum around. Here the creamy cold-weather favorite stars a batter fashioned of butter, two types of sugar, and vanilla ice cream. A finishing flourish of spices adds the perfect flavor note to
balance out all that sweetness. 1501 Western Ave, Ste 202; zigzagseattle.com

Butterbeer: Hot Cakes

Warm butterscotch meets freshly pressed apple
juice, sparkling wine, and a bit of ginger. The results are like the very best sweet apple cider, but in an unexpectedly delicious way. The dessert bar can also do a nonalcoholic version and has an equally tempting menu of boozy shakes. 5427 Ballard Ave NW and 1650 E Olive Way; getyourhotcakes.com

Hot Chocolate: The Chocolate Box (Family Friendly)

The shop’s “chocolate bar” pours a decadent choose-your-own-adventure of the classic winter drink. Begin with a hot chocolate or a denser sipping chocolate, then opt to add anything from peanut butter to salted caramel to flavored marshmallows. Finish it all with a swirl of house-whipped cream. 106 Pine St; sschocolatebox.com
