SPECIAL TRAFFIC ALERT FOR WASHINGTON STATE
Interstate 5 At Mount Vernon, WA Reopens

After May’s partial collapse of the four-lane freeway bridge over a river at Mount Vernon, WA, Interstate 5 reopened June 19, thanks to a temporary span. Each direction of the temporary span will be reduced to two 11-foot lanes with 1-foot shoulders and the speed limit will be reduced from 60 to 40 mph between the College Way and State Route 20 interchanges, a distance of roughly a half-mile on each side of the bridge. All oversized or overweight trucks must exit and use the current detour route.

The permanent replacement is expected to be ready for installation after the Labor Day weekend and before October 1. The installation of the new span could require a full closure of that stretch of Interstate 5 for up to two weeks, with reroutes again necessary.
